The new normal - Quarantine Thoughts
What hit us is not what we are prepared for nor the generation before us. It's been a century since Spanish Flu shook the planet and there are only a handful of centurions alive who I hardly doubt even remember it. Anyways, our world today is way different than it was 100 years ago. Out of all the differences and advancements the one that stands out is 'Internet'. Usually it is considered a boon that connected every nook and corner of the world but just like 'Dynamite', it is a double edged sword.
Thanks to the internet, we now know what is happening around the globe almost by the minute. But apart from a few individuals who 'need' to know these changes, isn't it a bit unnecessary and truth be spoken a little too overwhelming? Now more than ever, humans are tested to refrain from their temptations. Yes, the notifications of news keep popping up and yes your friend's invite to join you in the video game is pending and oh did you see that cute video of pup that went viral or that meme of the politician who farted during his speech? Wait a minute, you are now tagged on instagram for a challenge and that forward on whatsapp is just nuts! Oh my god, give me a break, will you?
I won't be surprised if people die of panic before the virus even reaches them. Clearly we are living in unprecedented times and it is important that we all come up with a disaster recovery plan... NOW! If you are suddenly feeling depressed or uninterested and want to take a break.. that is Okay! If you want to shut the computer down and just sleep.. that is Okay too. What is not okay is giving up. Listen to music, watch that movie, bake that cake or go on that run but DO NOT KILL THE HOPE that is residing within you. We cannot escape from the chaos of the society but we can definitely come up with a plan to manage them.
For extroverts and outdoor people, this might have hit the hardest but let's look at this time as an opportunity to introspect. You now have the time to sit and breathe! (meditation and yoga really help). A few mothers mentioned that they are actually enjoying their time having their kids around them unlike their busy school, soccer, paint, karate, dance or music classes. It is okay to miss them for a couple of months for the right reasons. If we can look at everything that crosses our path positively and use it for our advantage, maybe we might just turn the panic mode 'off'. Let's accept that what we are living is the 'New normal' atleast for a few days/weeks and plead our mind and body for their support in getting through this. Who knows, maybe we all will come out of this as better human beings!
